In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
