The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not only his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
