Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the option to question certain calls from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
